Bird caused sky to light up

UPDATE: noon

The cause of strange blue lights that illuminated the sky in Lake Country Saturday night has been determined.

Numerous residents and travellers witnessed the flashing blue lights just after 11 p.m.

BC Hydro spokesperson Mora Scott said there was a power outage at the same time and power was back on just after 1 a.m.

The outage and blue lights occurred after a bird came in contact with the wires.

“The blue light people might have seen is basically because when the bird made contact with our wires it acted as a conductor,” she said.

Electricity passed through the bird instead of the through the wires like it is supposed to.

“The sudden release of electricity in that moment was probably what caused the flash of light that people would have seen,” said Scott.

She added that trees and wildlife do cause a lot of outage for BC Hydro.

Multiple Lake Country residents say they saw strange flashes of blue lights in the sky and experienced a power outage on Saturday night.

Numerous Castanet readers reached out saying they lost power around 11 p.m. east of Highway 97 near Woodsdale Road and Oyama Road.

BC Hydro reported the outage occurred at 11:08 p.m. and that 1,667 customers were affected.

“Major power outage affecting Winfield, Oyama area,” said one Castanet reader. “Power out from Lodge Road to Isthmus.”

Witnesses reported seeing “flashes of blue light” at the same time as the outage.

A man named Ben Konkin said he saw the flashing lights at 11:15 p.m.

“These three blue flashes originated on the ground and flashed with even light and illuminated the entire valley and night sky,” he said. “The flashes each lasted about five seconds and had about 15 second delay between them.”

Another Castanet reader said they also saw the blue lights at 11:08 p.m. and thought it might have been due to a transformer.

As of Sunday morning, BC Hydro's outage map shows an outage at 11300 block of Darlene Road and five customers impacted.
