Big boost for rail trail

Madison Erhardt

The Okanagan Rail Trail received a big boost Thursday afternoon in Lake Country.

Kelowna-Lake Country MP Stephen Fuhr announced $1.3 million in federal funding on behalf of Minister of Infrastructure and Communities Amarjeet Sohi.

The 50-kilometre multi-use trail project spans four communities: the City of Kelowna, District of Lake Country, Okanagan Indian Band and Regional District of the North Okanagan.

“I am very proud that the federal government is supporting the Okanagan Rail Trail project. This is a great way to repurpose old infrastructure to meet current community needs. I very much look forward to seeing the many ways this project will enhance the lives of residents and support economic development throughout our beautiful region,” said Fuhr.

"My understanding is there is a good chance we will have this trail open from one end to the other before the snow flies," he said. "That is the goal."

Lake Country Mayor James Baker said purchasing the former rail line "demonstrated a commitment to preserving this vital regional asset for generations to come.”
