Flees police, hits tree

UPDATE: 4:50 p.m.

Kelowna police were tipped off that a man wanted on numerous outstanding warrants was living in Rutland.

Police staked out the Parkview-Springfield area and waited for him to pull into the Columbus Place housing complex.

Cpl. Kent Hall said when officers saw him pull in, they tried to arrest him.

"We attempted to make an arrest as he was sitting in the passenger seat of the car. As soon as he saw that the police were coming, he decided he was going to try and get in the driver's seat of the car and flee," said Hall.

The man jumped and managed to put the vehicle in drive, but "ended up colliding with one of our police vehicles and ultimately the vehicle stopped when it hit a tree," said Hall.

A police officer who was trying to arrest the man sustained minor injuries in the incident.

The male suspect was taken into custody, also with minor injuries.

Police on scene would not say what warrants the man is facing.
