'Powder cup' at Big White

Last call for Big White.

"It's been a fabulous year, that's for sure," Big White's Michael J. Ballingall tells Castanet.

Even though there is still plenty of snow, the ski season comes to a close this Sunday.

"The big plans are a season pass appreciation breakfast followed by the Slush Cup on Sunday," he says.

Almost 5,000 people showed up for the event last year.

"It's going to be the powder cup this year," says Ballingall. "It's snowing again today."

Big White is expected to receive another five centimetres of snow today, but the mountain has to close now to prepare for the summer mountain bike season.

"Believe me, we have the urge stay open, but the big thing for usis  we need it to melt. We've got to get into the dirt to build mountain bike trails. So, snow bad, rain good, hot weather good."

The hill opens for the summer June 28.
