Cornerstone gets a year

The Cornerstone homeless shelter in downtown Kelowna will be around for at least another year.

The Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing announced Thursday it is extending operations until March 31, 2019.

Cornerstone, in the former A & B Sound building on Leon Avenue, opened at the end of November.

Under the operation of the John Howard Society, it was scheduled to remain open until the end of March this year. Earlier this month, that was extended to the end of May.

The John Howard Society will continue to oversee operations.

The government says BC Housing and the society have met regularly with neighbouring residents, local businesses and the city to address concerns about the shelter. Optional locations will continue to be identified.

The 80 mats at Cornerstone have been fully occupied most nights throughout the winter.

BC Housing also indicated it is working with the city to find other locations for supportive housing, including a proposed project on Commerce Avenue.
