Pushing for new school

Talks between the province and School District 23 are underway for a new middle school in Rutland.

During a discussion in the legislature Monday concerning budget estimates at the Ministry of Education, Kelowna-Lake Country MLA Norm Letnick asked for an update on the status of the planned school.

"I know the lifespan of that building (Rutland Middle School) has reached the end of its usefulness," said Education Minister Rob Fleming, who toured Kelowna shortly after being sworn in as minister.

"We hear the district around the need in Rutland. We've asked them to compile a (preliminary design review), a business case, for the ministry to look at. When we get that, we will review the costs."

Fleming wouldn't provide a timeline, but did indicate the PDR is being reviewed.

"There are quite a few questions around it.... It's a complicated project. So, those questions are being discussed by the district and the ministry."

A new middle school for Rutland has been one of the top priorities for the district for several years.

With funding now in place for new middle schools in the Mission and Lake Country, Letnick and the school district are hoping an announcement for Rutland will come soon.
