'Bit of history' at blaze

UPDATE: 4 p.m.

Kelowna firefighters were pushed back by heavy smoke and dangerous fire activity at a Rutland house fire on Friday.

Platoon Capt. Tim Light says crews responded just before 12:30 p.m.to the home on Hollydell Road.

Heavy smoke coming from the front door and side entrance met firefighters, who attempted to enter but were pulled back when the fire activity became too dangerous.

The fire was cooled down from outside until crews were able to enter and extinguish it.

The fire's cause remains unknown, and crews are still on scene mopping up. RCMP will secure the scene until an investigation can take place.

Emergency Social Services is assisting five residents with temporary lodging.

UPDATE: 2:05 p.m.

Fire crews are expected to be on scene for the rest of the afternoon assessing a house fire in Rutland.

"It looks like we have the fire out and we are just digging in there to find any extension," said Kelowna Fire Department platoon Capt. Tim Light. "The basement of the house was fully involved in a deep-seated fire with heat damage upstairs."

Light said there were four to five tenants living in the basement suite alone, and there may have been a "hoarding issue."

"It's a pretty dirty fire, and we will be digging in there for a while," Light said.

Neighbours said there were police at the house last night, and in previous weeks.

"There is a bit of a history with the house," Light said, without going into detail.

The owner and the owner's grandson were home at the time of the fire, and the grandson, in his 20s, was sent to hospital for "minor smoke inhalation," according to Light.

Some neighbours said they believe the fire was set on purpose, but Light said firefighters are unsure at this time, and they're letting the RCMP investigate.
