Murder trial set for Nov.

The murder trial for the Rutland man accused of killing a 32-year-old man on Highway 33 in 2014 will begin in November, almost five years after the alleged murder took place.

Police found the body of Chris Ausman, a young father, on the sidewalk near Rutland Road in the early morning hours of Jan. 25, 2014.

Police called the death a murder shortly after Ausman's body was discovered, but it remained unsolved for years.

Nearly three years later, on Nov. 18. 2016, Steven Randy Pirko was charged with second-degree murder.

A preliminary inquiry wrapped up earlier this year, where a judge determined the Crown had sufficient evidence to proceed to a Supreme Court trial.

Jury selection for the trial will begin on Nov. 19, 2018, followed by a two-week long trial.
