Traffic delays for dark fibre

Motorists using Glenmore Road can expect some delays while the city installs another section of its dark fibre network.

Work will begin Monday and affect the portion of Glenmore Road north of Snowsell Street to John Hindle Drive.

While construction will mainly take place on the road shoulder, but there will be single-lane, alternating traffic when construction moves from the west side to the east side south of Galiano Road.

The Glenmore project is one of five areas where the city's dark fibre network will expand to in 2018. The total cost is $1.14 million.

The city has already installed approximately 16 kilometres of fibre optic cable to provide high bandwidth data services to a number of city facilities. It helps improve city service delivery, saves money and attracts investment from the high-tech sector.

The dark fibre offering has no limits on bandwidth, so organizations that need to move large amounts of data can now move infinite amounts of data at whatever speeds they want, for a flat monthly fee to the City of Kelowna.

This year, another 20 kilometres will be added, more than doubling the size of the network to accommodate future city needs and to be available for lease to businesses and institutions.

The Glenmore Road project is expected to be complete March 31.
