Killed before baby shower

On the afternoon of March 11, 2016, Naomi Foureyes' friends and family helped decorate her Rutland home for her baby shower she planned to throw the following day.

Later that night, Foureyes' common-law spouse and the father of her five-week-old daughter, was stabbed to death.

The second-degree murder trial for 26-year-old Chad Alphonse, the man accused of stabbing 26-year-old Waylon Percy Jackson to death, began Tuesday.

In his opening statement to the jury, Crown prosecutor David Grabavac said Alphonse was dating Naomi's sister, Phillisede, and the two couples had been drinking at Jackson's and Naomi's home at 115 Gerstmar Road.

Jackson and Naomi's five-week-old daughter and Naomi's four-year-old son were also in the home.

The Crown says Jackson and Naomi had gone to bed just after 9 p.m., but Phillisede and Alphonse stayed downstairs, arguing.

“Mr. Jackson then came downstairs to stop the argument,” Grabavac said. “Mr. Jackson then became involved in the argument which escalated into a physical fight between Mr. Jackson and Mr. Alphonse.”

Grabavac says at one point, Jackson hit Alphonse in the head several times with a chair, before turning and walking away.

As he walked away, the Crown believes Alphonse stabbed Jackson several times, once in the shoulder and twice in the chest, puncturing his heart and lung.

Jackson, who was preparing to celebrate the birth of his daughter the next day, was pronounced dead at 10:24 p.m. at Kelowna General Hospital.

Alphonse was found by police two blocks away, just after 10 p.m., with no shoes or jacket. He was arrested, and police found a red and blue folding knife in his pants pocket, covered in blood.

A test of the blood on the knife matched Jackson's DNA.

The murder trial is scheduled to take three weeks, and the Crown will call 27 witnesses. It's unknown if Alphonse will call any witnesses in his own defence.
