A driver in Kelowna needs a reminder of how to clear the snow off their vehicle.

The driver of an SUV was spotted on Sunday afternoon driving from Highway 33 to Richter and Highway 97 with their license plate and lights covered in snow.

“You couldn’t see his lights at all, it was dangerous,” said the driver who spotted them.

RCMP said drivers could face up to $339 in fines if they are caught.

“RCMP recommend that motorists take the time to properly clear snow and other debris from their motor vehicles,” said Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey. “Failure to do so can be hazardous to motorist and others they share the road with.”

Obscured license plates could land a driver with a $230 fine and inadequate lamps carries a $109 fine.

“A number plate must be kept entirely unobstructed and free from dirt or foreign materials," said O’Donaghey.

"Numbers and letters on it may be plainly seen and read at all times and so that the numbers and letters may be accurately photographed using a speed monitoring device or traffic light safety device prescribed."

The witness said the vehicle was going 80 km/h and his lights were not visible.

“I had to stay my distance because I couldn’t see when they were braking. I was pretty afraid,” he said.

RCMP also recommend that motorists pull off the highway periodically throughout their travels, when it's safe to do so, and clear snow and debris from their vehicles.
