Global cuts hit Okanagan

Three Okanagan employees lost their jobs at Global News this week.

North Okanagan reporter Megan Turcato and two camera operators are out of work, after Global’s parent company slashed nearly 80 people from Global newsrooms across the country.

Contrary to earlier reports, senior reporter Blaine Gaffney was not laid off.

Union rep Barb Van Stone said some miscommunication at the corporate level led to the mistake, and Gaffney will be staying on.

"We are just waiting for the dust to settle and for more information on how this happened, and what happened," said Van Stone.

She added that four positions, not people, are being cut, and that two new positions are also being created.

Parent company Corus Entertainment says the cuts are part of restructuring that will see it focus more heavily on online news platforms.

The company says the shift will see it add approximately 50 new positions, many of which will file for new, locally focused Global News websites in places like Ottawa, Kitchener, and Guelph.

Troy Reeb, senior vice-president of Global News, said on Global’s website the company sees online opportunities in markets where local newspapers were recently closed or consolidated.

Global says some of the employees it let go will be able to apply for the new online positions.
