Bikeshare plan unveiled

Several dozen bike pick-up and drop-off locations will be set up around downtown Kelowna as part of an 18-month bike share agreement between the city and Dropbike Inc.

Locations, known as havens, would be located between Clement and Lake Avenues, and Ellis Street to the lake.

Other locations could be added during the length of the pilot project.

Council will be asked to enter into an agreement with the company Monday.

The agreement would give Dropbike access to city property for the duration of the project.

The bikeshare model has been emerging in several cities in Canada and around the world. If gives people the opportunity to pick up a bike at one location for short-term use, and return it to any of the specific havens around downtown for a nominal fee.

Under terms of the proposed agreement, Dropbike would be responsible for the program, including demarking haven locations using a smart phone app, maintaining bikes, inspecting bikes daily, responding to inquiries and complaints and providing data and financial information at regular intervals.

The company would provide between 500 and 1,500 bikes for the pilot project.

The project is expected to be launched in the spring, and run through fall of 2019.
