New tiller joins milfoil fight

A new, built-in-the-Okanagan rototiller will join the valley's milfoil control fleet this year.

The Okanagan Basin Water Board was updated this week on its construction, which should be complete by April.

Built by Multi-Power Products of Kelowna, it will complement three other machines plying Okanagan lakes. The older equipment is between 14 and 34 years old.

The rototillers are used during winter months to deroot the invasive weed from lake bottoms, when it won’t re-root. During summer, the weed is mowed and removed with harvesters.

Meanwhile, the board has re-elected Kelowna Coun. Tracy Gray as its chair, and Vernon Coun. Juliette Cunningham as vice-chair, by acclamation.

The rest of the 2018 board includes: Coldstream Coun. Doug Dirk, Rick Fairbairn of the RDCO, West Kelowna Mayor Doug Findlater, Peachland Mayor Cindy Fortin, Osoyoos Mayor Sue McKortoff, Oliver Mayor Ron Hovanes, and Summerland Mayor Peter Waterman.
