Kelowna pilot gets big air

A major fundraising effort for Canadian charity Hope air is at the halfway mark and a few days behind schedule.

The Give Hope wings flight has reached the tip of South America and is flying northward along the coast of Argentina.

"We had a two-day delay due to administration in Peru, one day due to bad weather and a one day delay due to the Pope's South American visit," said Kelowna pilot Dave McElroy.

The flight took off from Kelowna International Airport on Jan. 2 with plans to visit 20 countries. The journey is approaching 20,000 kilometers and has raised $483,000 of a $500,000 goal.

One of the highlights of the trip was McElroy's appearance on The Craig Ferguson Radio Show last month. McElroy has been invited back to chat with the former late night talk show star, on his return trip, if the logistics can be worked out.

Hope Air provides flights to get Canadians to receive medical care from remote communities or where services are not available. On average, four people a day are able to use the service from YLW.
