Discussing 'fake news'

How does fake news affect politics and democracy?

An award-winning journalist is coming to Kelowna to discuss the phenomenon.

Chantal Hebert, perhaps Canada's best-known political commentator, is a columnist with the Toronto Star and weekly participant on CBC's The National At Issue panel.

The discussion, a part of UBC Okanagan's Irving K. Barber School of Arts and Sciences’ distinguished speaker series, will discuss the concept of fake news, a term now heard almost daily since U.S. President Donald Trump introduced it into the vernacular a year or so ago.

"Is the spread of so-called fake news really the biggest threat to electoral democracy, or is it more of a convenient scapegoat for a troubled media industry?" reads the event's description.

Hebert will speak Feb. 13, 7 p.m., at Kelowna Community Theatre. While the event is free, online registration is required, beginning Feb. 6.
