Alleged pimp's trial set

An alleged Kelowna pimp is tentatively scheduled to stand trial in Supreme Court next fall.

Simon Rypiak was arrested in August 2016 after an 11-month police investigation that spanned across B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan and Quebec.

Rypiak, who also went by the name Simon Ross, is accused of recruiting girls between the ages of 15 and 20 from across Canada for his Kelowna escort business, using social media.

“Investigators also believe that the accused used physical violence to maintain control of his victims,” Const. Jesse O’Donaghey said at the time.

He's facing 13 charges, including sexual assault, procuring sexual services of a person under 18, assault causing bodily harm and benefiting from sexual services.

During a four-day preliminary inquiry in November, a judge found the Crown's case strong enough to proceed to a Supreme Court trial.

On Thursday, a three-week trial for Rypiak was set for Oct. 22, 2018, but this date is still tentative.

Rypiak's case will be back before the court on Feb. 26 to confirm the trial date.
