Cooking across country

The Canadian Culinary Championships return to Kelowna Feb. 2-3.

Eleven of the best chefs from across the country have competed to represent their regions, with the Gold Medal Plates grand finale at the Delta Grand Hotel.

Proceeds from the event benefit the Canadian Olympic Foundation.

BARRY MOONEY – GIO, HALIFAX

Barry Mooney was born in Halifax and raised in Bridgetown in the Annapolis Valley.

He is a graduate of George Brown College culinary management program in Toronto and is a certified Chef de Cuisine from Humber College.

Mooney's career started in Jasper, Alta., at the Sawridge Convention Centre. He then spent five years at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto.

He came back out West, to the Banff Springs Hotel, for five years and has since returned home to the East Coast to raise his growing family. He is currently chef of GIO at the Prince George Hotel.
