Grinch steals, returns gift

Alanna Kelly

A woman stole a package right off a Lake Country doorstep moments after it was delivered, but then decided to return it just hours later after opening it.

Nick Martin was working in Kelowna on Thursday afternoon when he received a message from his home security system that someone was on his front porch.

A delivery man had just dropped off his package from Amazon at about 12:30 p.m.

Within 20 minutes he received another notification.

“She was at the front door ringing the doorbell, standing at the door… knocking at the door for about a minute,” said Martin.

“At first I didn’t know who it was so I was wondering who it was and then I started getting suspicious. I could see she bent over and picked up the package and walked away.”

Martin said it was a big shock and he was very upset to see her stealing from his doorstep.

He contacted the RCMP, who told him they would patrol the area.

A few hours later, Martin came home for the evening and was inside his home at about 5 p.m., when he got another notification that someone was at his door.

“I could see in the video it was the same lady as earlier today leaving the package on the front steps, walking away and crossing the street,” he said.

The package was open and resealed with different tape.

“This time I saw her walk right across my yard and across the street… I think she is my neighbour,” he said.

Martin said he hasn’t opened the package as he wants to leave it for the RCMP.

“It’s scary, I just moved to this neighbourhood and I like to think it's a nice neighbourhood, but after having this happen to me it makes me a little nervous about the people around here,” he said.

Those who may recognize the woman in the video have been asked to contact the Lake Country RCMP at 250 766-2288.
