McKinley landslide

Madison Erhardt

UPDATE: 2:55 p.m.

Russ Watson, a partner with the McKinley Beach project believes the hillside gave way due to a sinkhole.

"We have noticed over the last two days, a change in ground water patterns between two rock formations," said Watson.

"Crews were starting to construct a retaining wall at the time the rock formation began to sink. The area started to slide around (10 a.m.) this morning," he added.

Engineers have been on scene all day assessing the situation.

"Fortunately, it didn't affect any of our permanent structures," Watson said.

Construction workers on scene said the crack began to form yesterday and got larger as the day progressed.

The information has yet to be confirmed.

ORIGINAL: 1:30 p.m.

Part of a hillside has apparently given way around the McKinley Beach development.

According to one witness, a retaining wall gave way and, basically, everything above it came down with it.

He said the slide went all the way down to a lower road where new condos are going up.

Castanet has a reporter at the scene.

More details when they become available.
