New parking, sport at Gyro

The City of Kelowna plans to improve parking and increase the number of volleyball courts at one of its most popular beach parks.

Council gave the go ahead Monday for a plan to construct a permanent 132-stall parking lot on the north side of Boyce Gyro Beach park on Lakeshore Road.

Two more beach volleyball courts will also be added to the current four courts on the property.

Parks planning manager Robert Parlane says construction will begin this year on the 132-stall parking lot and drop off area on part of the site which is currently being used as a gravel parking lot.

He told council construction of the new lot will not only be more efficient, but will allow for 'reclamation' of the existing lot for the two additional volleyball courts and passive greenspace.

The city purchased the property in 2006 with designs on eventually constructing a parking lot for the beach park. At the time, the area was served by a parking lot to the south and one on the opposite corner of Richter and Lakeshore.

Those amounted to 58 stalls.

Parlane said the current gravel lot, designed to hold up to 112 vehicles was established in 2008. However, since it was unmarked, Parklane said it maxed out at 95 to 100 vehicles.
