Arson suspect captured

A man who allegedly started a string of small fires in Kelowna has been caught by RCMP.

Police were able to track down the suspect after his image was posted online.

RCMP received several calls from the public on Monday, including one from a man who witnessed the suspect starting a fire at the corner of Springfield Road and Burtch Road.

The suspect fled east along Springfield, cut through a business parking lot and into an orchard.

“Not long after police released the suspect images to the media, an employee of a local Kelowna business immediately recognized the male suspect as an individual who frequented their establishment,” said Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey.

Officers caught the man near Gordon Drive and Harvey Avenue on Wednesday.

The suspect is 34 years old and from South Okanagan, with no fixed address. He remains in custody.
