Man drowns in Wood Lake

UPDATE: 5:30 p.m.

RCMP say a man pulled from Wood Lake Wednesday afternoon has died.

Emergency crews were called to the scene about 2:30 p.m. after the victim failed to resurface while swimming to a floating swimming platform.

Lake Country firefighters launched their rescue boat and were aided in their search by civilian boaters and two divers from the fire department, says RCMP spokesman Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey.

“The man’s body was located below the water’s surface, in approximately eight feet of water. Rescuers quickly pulled the man from the lake and immediately began CPR."

The 31-year-old Alberta man could not be resuscitated and was pronounced dead at Kelowna General Hospital.

O’Donaghey thanked members of the public who helped in the search and in pulling the man from the lake.

The BC Coroners Service is investigating.

Lake Country Fire Rescue confirms a man was pulled from the waters of Wood Lake.

Assistant fire chief Brent Penner says the man was located and retrieved near the north shore of the lake, offshore from Oyama and Trask roads.

The body was found in about 10 feet of weedy water after reports of a swimmer in trouble sparked a grid search of the lake.

CPR was performed on the man en route to a waiting ambulance at the shore, but Penner could not comment on his condition.

The victim was taken to Kelowna General Hospital.

Marine rescue units are conducting a grid search on Wood Lake after finding an abandoned boat.

While there is no indication there may be a drowning, crews are searching the lake to be sure.

Multiple crews are on scene, on both land and water.
