Smoke index remains high

Smoke from interior wildfires continues to sit over the Okanagan Valley, prompting yet another special weather statement from Environment Canada.

The Air Quality Health Index across the valley remains at a seven, or high, this morning.

It is expected to drop to a more moderate risk later in the day in the central and south Okanagan, but will remain high in the North Okanagan for the balance of the day.

Smoke concentrations will vary widely as winds, fire behaviour and temperatures change.

People are reminded to avoid strenuous outdoor activities.

If you experience difficulty in breathing, chest pain or discomfort, and sudden onset of cough or irritation of airways, you're asked to contact your doctor immediately.

Exposure is particularly a concern for infants, the elderly and those who have underlying medical conditions such as diabetes, and lung or heart disease.

Thick smoke is expected to remain for at least the balance of the week.
