Backyard burns, power out

A quick response from a Rutland resident put out a backyard fire before it became out of control Saturday morning.

Just before 10 a.m., a witness heard a loud bang, reportedly from a blown transformer, behind Dougall Road near McIntosh Road.

Sparks landed in a backyard and ignited the dry grass, but the resident quickly fought the fire with a hose, dousing it before fire crews arrived.

The Kelowna Fire Department and FortisBC crews are now on scene.

The incident has knocked out power across most of Rutland, affecting almost 6,000 homes in the area.

FortisBC does not have an estimated time the power will be back on at this time.
