Danger closes more parks

More Kelowna parks have been closed due to the extreme fire hazard.

The following parks will be closed to the public until conditions improve:

  • Paul’s Tomb and Lochview Trail
  • Canyon Falls Park
  • Dewdney Road Beach Access #1

“These parks have been identified as a risk, with limited access points paired with extremely dry grass and underbrush that can ignite in the hot, dry conditions we’ve been experiencing,” said Blair Stewart, the city's parks services manager.

The closures are in addition to those at Dilworth Mountain Park, which closed last week. Also, Knox Mountain Drive is closed to vehicle traffic until further notice.

Anyone who notices smoke or fire in any park should immediately call *5555 on their cellphone for the BC Wildfire Management Branch, or 911 to speak to the fire department.

A fire ban is currently in place across the province. Campfires and barbecues are not permitted in city or regional parks. Smoking is strictly prohibited in all parks and public spaces. There will be zero tolerance if offenders are found smoking in parks and public spaces, with fines up to $500.

Most waterfront parks and beaches in Kelowna are open, including City Park and Rotary Beach Park.
