Malfunction sparks fire

UPDATE: 11:40 P.M.

Firefighters were called to A.J. Forsyth Russel Metals for reports of a possible grass fire just before 10 a.m. Wednesday.

"A piece of machinery had malfunctioned and caught fire, and also got the grass going as well," said Kelowna Fire Department Platoon Capt. John Kelly.

The fire was contained to the exterior of the building, and was put out in quick order, he said.

A worker from the building used a garden hose to keep the fire from spreading until fire crews arrived.

The official cause of the fire is not yet known, "but it is obviously an equipment malfunction,"  Kelly said.

UPDATE: 10:35 am.

The fire was apparently limited to a piece of equipment at A.J. Forsyth Russel Metals on Grigg Road, off Jim Bailey Crescent.

More details to come.

UPDATE: 10:15 a.m.

Fire crews apparently have the fire knocked down and are in mop-up mode.

Additional units were called off.
