Ski legend battling cancer

A Canadian ski legend has been diagnosed with cancer.

Olympic gold medalist Nancy Greene Raine is undergoing treatment for thyroid cancer.

Greene Raine is currently director of skiing at Sun Peaks Resort near Kamloops and, according to resort general manager Darcy Alexander, Greene Raine was to have her thyroid removed in Kelowna Thursday.

The former skiing star will rest and recover over the coming weeks. Additional cancer treatment will begin within four or five weeks to manage the suspected spread of cancer cells.

“Nancy and her husband, Al Raine, remain very positive about the outcome of these treatments. Thyroid cancer is known to be one of the most treatable types of cancer,” said Alexander.

Greene Raine is a sitting Canadian senator and plans to return to her Senate duties as soon as possible following treatment.

Greene Raine was Canada's top ski racer through the 1960s, winning gold and silver medals at the 1968 Grenoble Olympics and overall World Cup titles in 1967 and 68.

Her 13 World Cup victories is still a Canadian record. She won 17 Canadian championship titles in all disciplines.

Retiring at age 24, Nancy married Al Raine and together they made skiing their lives' work. They have been instrumental in the development and promotion of ski tourism in British Columbia, first at Whistler and then at Sun Peaks Resort.
