Run your 'butts' off

A program encouraging people to quit smoking while enjoying the benefits of exercise and a change in lifestyle is coming to the Central Okanagan.

Run to Quit was first introduced by the Canadian Cancer Society, Running Room and Public Health Agency of Canada a year ago.

Results, according to surveys, are encouraging. After one year, participants say the program has led to a decrease in smoking and influenced measurable healthy behaviour and lifestyle change.

Ninety-one per cent of people have either cut back, or quit smoking as a result.

The program is being rolled out in Kelowna Saturday, April 8, at the Running Room in Orchard Plaza.

It's a 10-week clinic that pairs the quit-smoking expertise of the Canadian Cancer Society with Running Room Canada's learn to walk or 5km-run clinics.

“You get into a mindset and you’re not sure if you can quit, you first have to reset your mind and with the program we help you stay on track from there," said instructor Scott Thomson, who once smoked a pack a day.

"It’s a slow process, but very worthwhile and we’re looking forward to helping people interested in quitting smoking.”
