New rink in town

Residents of the Scotty Creek neighbourhood of Ellison will get to have an outdoor ice rink next winter.

The Regional District of Central Okanagan has begun the first phase of what will become a multi-purpose sports court in the neighbourhood.

It's being built adjacent to Ellison Elementary School.

The regional district came up with the idea for the court, along with area residents, after a community-created ice rink on property owned by Black Mountain Irrigation was shut down by the water utility.

The court, which could be complete before summer, can be used for tennis or basketball in spring, summer and fall, and flooded for hockey and skating in the winter.

RDCO communications officer Bruce Smith says the first phase of the project – curbing, fencing, trails and landscaping – is underway and should be complete in about a month.

The first phase of what was anticipated to be a $110,000 project, came in at more than anticipated.

Smith says in order to complete the project, and additional $100,000 will need to be approved when the district's final budget is adopted at the end of the month.

Money to pay for the sports courts is coming from the Canada/BC Gas Tax Community Works Fund.

Neighbours in the area are also raising money to put up boards in the winter to accommodate hockey.
