2,000 vying for new docs

A new medical clinic opening next month in Lake Country has received nearly 2,000 applications so far from prospective patients.

"It's been overwhelming to say the least," said Kiffer Walker, general manager of the Turtle Bay Medical Clinic.

"I think there's just a big doctor shortage," said Walker, adding people in Lake Country are driving to Kelowna or Vernon to see a doctor.

The building is complete, and they are now in the process of moving furniture and medical equipment into their location in the Turtle Bay Crossing complex on Oceola Road.

The clinic will open April 3.

Walker said the clinic has recruited four doctors and is in talks with three more. Their goal is to have the equivalent of six full-time physicians.

The clinic formally reached out to new patients two weeks ago in a post on Facebook. However, applications have been flooding in since the clinic started trying to recruit doctors in January.

Walk-in appointments will be welcome at the family practice.
