Big love for Big White, Star

Readers of USA Today think highly of ski hills across the province.

Big White, Silver Star and Whistler were all prominently ranked in the USA Today 10 Best Readers' Choice for 2016.

Telus Park at Big White was voted the No. 2 terrain park in voting conducted over a four-week period.

“The park is built around the progression system, consisting of small, medium, large and extra-large sizing,” said Flynn Seddon, the mountain's director of terrain parks and outdoor events.

“This allows skiers and snowboarders to progress along at their own pace and ride within their ability range. The areas are separated, allowing riders to ski and board in the zone that they are most comfortable in.”

Whister was voted eighth. Seven Springs Mountain in Pennsylvania was rated No. 1, while Northstar California Resort in Truckee, Calif., was third.

Silver Star in Vernon came fifth in voting for best cross-country ski resort.

The poll described Silver Star this way during voting: "SilverStar Mountain Resort is home to Canada's largest network of daily groomed Nordic trails. Dual mountain ski passes allow visitors to enjoy the 34 miles (55 kilometres) of trails at SilverStar in addition to 31 miles (50 kilometres) of trails at neighbouring Sovereign Lake Nordic Centre."

Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, Vt., was No. 1 in that category.

Whistler was named in five separate polls.

Aside from finishing as the eighth best terrain park, it also ranked sixth in best ski resort, seventh in best ski destination an eighth in best ski town.

Whistler's Garibaldi Lift Co. was ranked sixth among apres ski bars.

Only North American ski resorts were in the running.
