New HOV signs to ignore

While a lot of motorists in Kelowna ignore the HOV signs altogether, some may have noticed the new lit up signage meant to catch your eye – at a cost of $91,000.

According to the Ministry of Transportation, the HOV LED signs were installed in the Kelowna area in December as a means to “improve traffic flow on Highway 97, support rapid transit and enhance awareness for drivers”.

When lit up, the signs indicate the HOV lanes are in effect and when off they indicate the lanes are open to all traffic.

The HOV lanes in the Kelowna area are in effect from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Friday (excluding holidays).

When the HOV rules are in effect, the lanes are supposed to only be used by vehicles carrying two or more occupants, BC Transit buses, Handy Dart buses, taxis, motorcycles and emergency vehicles.

The B.C. government says the 12 signs were installed at a cost of approximately $91,000.
