Kelowna most pet friendly city

Kelowna has a new title - pet-friendliest city in Canada.

That according to Canadian Dogs Annual 2015, which will hit newsstands tomorrow (Tuesday).

According to the publication, Kelowna edged out several other urban Canadian cities for the title.

“We looked at a wide range of issues that affect our companion animals’ lives,” says Dana Cox, editor-in-chief of Redstone Media Group, the publisher of Canadian Dogs Annual.

“Criteria included access to veterinary care, training, pet sitters, and quality pet products, as well as the number of pet-friendly restaurants and accommodations. We even took into consideration air quality and the number of off leash parks and beaches.”

The data was calculated per capita to ensure fairness from coast to coast.

While Kelowna topped the city poll, BC was also found to be the pet-friendliest province.

The top four cities in the survey are in BC, including Victoria (2), Nanaimo (3) and Vancouver (4).

Chilliwack (6) and Kamloops (8) also made the top 10 list.

Publisher Tim Hockley says it was encouraging to see the number of amenities and services now available for our furry friends.

“There’s definitely been an upward trend towards more pet-friendly services,” says Hockley, “and there’s no question that’s a direct result of how important our companion animals have become to us. It’s a scenario where everyone, including the dogs, win.”

According to the city website, Kelowna has 85 on or off leash dog parks in the city which accounts for 76 per cent of the city's park space.

There are seven permanent off leash parks and two temporary parks, Rowcliffe Park and Rutland Recreation Park.
