Armed gunman threatens self

A 23-year-old Kelowna man is in Kelowna General Hospital after he was found threatening to harm himself with a loaded handgun in downtown Kelowna on the weekend.

The incident occurred shortly before noon Saturday.

According to police the man fled the area when a witness attempted to intervene.

"Police conducted extensive patrols and quickly located the suspect in the 700 block of Saucier Avenue," says Cst. Jesse O'Donaghey.

"Through the successful use of police training and deescalation techniques, the man was arrested without incident. Although uninjured, he was transported to Kelowna General Hospital for any treatment he may require."

The unidentified man faces charges of carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and unauthorized possession of a weapon.

He was released into the care of medical practitioners and was given a Promise to Appear September 11.
