Difference makers vie for cash prizes

It's like Dragon's Den for social change.

Thursday night at the Rotary Centre for the Arts, 12 finalists will vie for cash prizes in what is being billed as the 'first contest in the Okanagan to give a socially-minded leader the chance to pitch their ideas and vision.'

Those ideas are designed to create a stronger, healthy and more vibrant region.

ChangeUP is an initiative of Okanagan Changemakers, a self described non-profit organization focused on making measurable impact by helping to solve social problems through collaboration, mentorship and action.

More than 250 people are expected to attend Thursday's event where finalists will share inspiring stories of social change.

$20,000 in prize money and in-kind services are up for grabs to help winners achieve their social goals.

Audience members will have a chance to vote for the most inspiring and sustainable ideas in four categories:

  • For-profit
  • Non-profit
  • Established Registered Charity
  • Youth-led Initiative

The event runs from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday.

Tickets are $45 and includes access to a networking hour, social enterprise showcase, food and live music.
