Kamloops one of 25 cities named for rollout of new-look Zellers

Zellers is coming back

UPDATE: 11:38 a.m.

The new Zellers outlet in Kamloops will occupy between 8,000 and 10,000 square feet inside the Hudson’s Bay store in Aberdeen Mall, according to an HBC spokeswoman.

“Customers will be greeted with a thoughtful selection of design-led products across home decor, toys, baby, apparel and pets, housed within Zellers’ signature red and white that will guide customers along their retail journey,” the company said in a news release.

A section of the second floor of the Hudson’s Bay store in Aberdeen Mall is walled off as of Wednesday, but it’s not yet known whether the space will be used for Zellers.

According to HBC, Zellers’ physical outlets and an online e-commerce site will launch simultaneously, though it’s not clear when that will be.

ORIGINAL STORY: 8:45 a.m.

Zellers is returning to the Tournament Capital.

Kamloops is one of 25 cities named by the venerable Canadian retail brand Wednesday for new locations. Other B.C. locations are Abbotsford, Surrey and Vancouver.

The new Zellers concept is for a store-within-a-store inside the Hudson’s Bay.

Zellers closed its Sahali Mall location in 2012 to make room for Target’s short-lived foray into Canada. Target closed in 2015.

HBC unveiled plans to bring the Zellers brand back to life last summer.

At the time, HBC said Zellers would debut as a new e-commerce site with brick-and-mortar footprints inside select Hudson’s Bay stores.

At one point in the 1990s, there were 350 Zellers stores across Canada. In 2011, HBC announced plans to sell the majority of the remaining Zellers stores to Target.

There is no word yet on when the Kamloops location might open.
