Absentee rates rising in Kamloops-Thompson school district

SD73 absenteeism increases

The Kamloops-Thompson school district says absenteeism rates for students and staff are higher than usual in recent weeks.

SD73 Supt. Rhonda Nixon told Castanet Kamloops teacher absenteeism is up seven to 10 per cent over last month, but she said not all absences are related to illness.

“Many factors impact employee absenteeism in a school district — professional workshops, meetings and medical reasons,” she said.

“We are seeing a slight growth in absenteeism rates as they relate specifically to illness but that is typical with the start of flu season.”

Nixon said CUPE absenteeism is up about one to two per cent over last month.

Student absenteeism since Nov. 1 is up five per cent over the same period last year.

Nixon said the district is encouraging students and staff to stay up to date on vaccinations, stay home when sick and engage in regular hand-washing.
