Quick work by KFR saved nearby home after two-alarm house fire in Aberdeen

House fire tackled quickly

UPDATE: 5:56 p.m.

Kamloops Fire Rescue crews quickly knocked down a large fire in an Aberdeen home on Tuesday, with officials saying the fast response stopped flames from causing more extensive damage to a neighbouring house.

First responders were called to the fire, which started at a residence in the 2200-block of Sifton Lane, at about 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday.

Scott Karpiak, assistant chief of operations for KFR, said when crews arrived on scene, it was apparent “this was a big, working fire.”

“When they got here — Engine 7 from Aberdeen was first in — they went with a quick knock-down off the water on the truck, and got in between the two structures, because as you can see, the neighbouring structure was starting to burn from the outside,” Karpiak told Castanet Kamloops.

Karpiak said a big concern with structure fires is the exposure potential from structure to neighbouring structure.

He said a fence and cedar hedging between the two homes possibly acted as a “ladder fuel,” but crews acted quickly to stop the fire from further spread.

“The guys did a fantastic job, quick knockdown. And they not just put this fire out, but they saved a lot of damage on the neighbouring structures,” Karpiak said.

Karpiak said there were no occupants inside the house when the fire happened.

A neighbour told Castanet Kamloops she had just returned to her house from an outing when she saw a fire on the front deck of the nearby home.

“I rushed in the house and told my husband. He got our hose out and started hosing our house down,” she said, adding within minutes the flames started to jump to another neighbouring structure.

The smoke from the fire was highly visible from nearby highways and Albert McGowan Park.

Karpiak said the blaze was initially reported as a first alarm fire, but the call was upgraded by KFR officials on scene.

“It got upgraded by the incident commander on scene to a second alarm fire, which is all our staff on duty in the city, within every truck, out of every station in town,” Karpiak said.

“Fortunately, none of our other apparatus were tied up at any other incidents when the call came in, so we had a healthy response in a timely manner.”

Karpiak said two pets were still unaccounted for, and crews were still searching for them.

He said fire investigators were on their way to the home to determine the cause of the blaze.
