Tk'emlups te Secwepemc activates EOC as flood concerns rise

Band preparing for flooding

Tk’emlups te Secwepemc officials are activating the band’s emergency operations centre due to flood risk, as well as stepping up inspections of dikes on reserve land.

The band announced Wednesday it is activating its emergency operations centre to Level 1 — the lowest level of readiness.

“This allows TteS to actively monitor dike levels and to begin select protection operations, including the stockpiling of sandbags if the need arises,” the band said in announcing the precautionary move.

The band said it will continue to provide updates on water levels and flood preparation as necessary.

Sandbags are available for band members or reserve residents looking to protect their properties, and can be picked up at 763 East Athabasca St.

Any volunteers looking to help with sandbagging efforts are asked to call 236-597-9844.

River levels in the Kamloops area are very high, and officials have warned "significant flooding" is possible in the coming days.
