Kamloops cheer team places eighth at world cheerleading meet

Cheer team eighth in world

A Tournament Capital cheerleading team cracked the Top 10 competing at one of the biggest cheer competitions in world.

Frozen Reign from Freeze Athletics returned late last month from Florida, where they competed at the Summit Cheerleading Championships.

Aly Bradford, coach and owner at Freeze Athletics said the team of athletes aged 13 to 18 placed eighth in the world and first in Canada in the L2-U19 division at the Summit.

Bradford said the members of Frozen Reign were very calm before getting on stage, despite it being their first international competition.

“I would say it was probably the best run that they've ever done,” the coach told Castanet Kamloops.

“Once we got the scores, it was the highest scoring run they'd had the whole season. So we were all really excited and very proud of them. They were all really happy with how they performed.”

Before leaving for Orlando, Bradford told Castanet the team’s goal heading to the Summit was to advance to the finals that take place on the May 1. Unfortunately, eighth spot did not qualify for finals — but the team still came back as winners.

“They walked out you know with their heads held high and did the best performance that they could have possibly done,” she said.

Locally, Frozen Reign is the only team in their division, meaning at local competitions Frozen Reign hasn’t competed against another teams this season. Bradford said it was very different for Frozen Reign to go from being the only team in their division to competing against the best teams in the world.

Bradford said she couldn’t have been more proud watching the team perform.

“My co-coach and I were just so incredibly excited, both of us ended up actually crying in the middle of the run because we were just so proud of them and it was their best performance,” Bradford said.

“It was the best show they had put on, they had the most excitement on their face of any of their competitions.”

Frozen Reign is competing in their last competition this season in Kelowna over the weekend.
