Services are slowly returning to Merritt as more residents return to the flood-ravaged community.
This is a collection of updates provided by groups that service the city.
BC HYDRO
BC Hydro says there are about 80 homes in the City of Merritt that will need an electrical inspection before power is restored.
In an update Monday afternoon, the utility said it restored electricity to 42 customers in the community over the weekend, but the remainder need a visit from an electrical contractor before BC Hydro can reconnect their home.
Across the B.C. Interior, BC Hydro restored power to 80 customers over the weekend.
Work also continues in the Highway 8 corridor, which was devastated by the November 15 flooding event.
Service was restored on Friday to 10 customers in Nooaitch along Shackelly Road, and about 30 customers now have power between Spius Creek and Dot Ranch. BC Hydro crews are working to replace equipment and restore service to additional customers in the area this week. The storm destroyed 87 power poles and 14 transformers along Highway 8.
CANADA POST
Canada Post announced Monday that its post office at 2040 Voght Street has reopened. It begins its holiday hours this week and will be open Monday to Thursday from 8:30 am to 7 pm; Fridays from 8:30 am to 5 pm; Saturdays from 9 am to 1 pm, and Sundays if required.
“The post office staff is encouraging and contacting customers to pick up their packages. As space to sort and store the mail is frequently maximized, we ask customers to pick up their packages to allow us to add more product to serve more customers,” Canada Post said in a statement.
CITY OF MERRITT
The City of Merritt issued a statement on Monday asking all residents to run their taps for two to three minutes a day.
“By doing so, it will contribute to lowering both chlorine and manganese levels that will ultimately put our city one step closer to removing the boil water notice and restoring our water system,” the city said.
