Man pepper sprayed on Victoria Street after 'becoming combative' with Mounties, police say

Pepper sprayed downtown

A man was pepper sprayed by Mounties on Victoria Street after refusing to leave a business, police say.

Police were called to a business in the 300-block of Victoria Street just before 1 a.m. on Saturday for a report of a man refusing to leave.

“Officers spoke with the man, who agreed to leave,” RCMP Const. Crystal Evelyn said.

“Shortly after, a physical confrontation occurred outside involving the same man. He was arrested for assault, at which point he allegedly became combative with police, kicked them and was subsequently pepper sprayed.”

Evelyn said the officer was unharmed but the civilian victim received minor injuries.

The man, who was also wanted on an unrelated warrant, was held until sober. He was released with a court date.

The investigation is ongoing.
