Screenwriter Ken Hegan begins writer in residence appointment at Thompson-Nicola Regional Library

Screenwriter Ken Hegan has officially begun his appointment as the Thompson-Nicola Regional Library’s first ever screenwriter in residence.

Hegan, who was born and raised in Kamloops, said in a statement he is excited and honoured to be chosen for the role.

“My mission as screenwriter in residence is to help locals dream up Kamloops stories that can be seen around the world,” Hegan said.

According to the TNRL, Hegan will be hosting a number of programs and services through the library over the fall.

Writers in the Thompson-Nicola Regional District can request a one-on-one consultation with Hegan, who will review a submitted writing sample and provide detailed feedback.

Hegan will also host a series of film screenings at the Paramount Theatre beginning in October.

Screenings will include question and answer periods with writers, directors and others involved in the making of the films.

According to the TNRL, Hegan plans to host group screenwriting workshops, teaching participants how to write comedy, captivating opening scenes, and how to select the best story to adapt for film.

The TNRL said Hegan is looking forward to providing assistance for those who write in other formats as well, with past experience writing for Rolling Stone, GQ, MSN and The National Post.

The TNRL writer in residence program began in 2019. According to the library, over 400 people participated in various events and programs that year, including 41 people who received one-on-one coaching.
