BC Lions training camp cut short due to smoke; team returning to Lower Mainland early

Smoke cuts Leos camp short

The BC Lions are pulling the plug on their Kamloops training camp and returning to the Lower Mainland a few days early due to smoky conditions.

The Leos preseason camp got underway on July 11 at Hillside Stadium and the Tournament Capital Centre.

“Thursday’s training camp activity at Hillside Stadium has been cancelled due to air quality,” the team said in a statement posted on its website late Thursday morning.

“Lions players and coaches will now return home to Surrey and begin preparations for Week 1 in Saskatchewan.”

Camp had been slated to wrap on Saturday. The club has held training camp in Kamloops for more than a decade, but the deal between the team and the city is about to expire.

The Lions will be in Regina on Aug. 6 to open the pandemic-delayed 2021 Canadian Football League season against the Roughriders.
