Updated mapping puts Sparks Lake blaze close to 50,000 hectares

Sparks nearing 50K hectares

UPDATE: 1:15 p.m.

A massive wildfire burning out of control northwest of Kamloops has grown again, but the blaze is no closer to city limits.

Mapping updated on Wednesday by the BC Wildfire Service pegs the Sparks Lake fire at about 500 square kilometres — 49,965 hectares. That's an increase of more than 2,000 hectares from the previous mapping, completed on Monday.

The fire’s southeast perimeter is still about 24 kilometres northwest of Kamloops city limits at Tranquille. The BCWS has said most of the fire's activity has been in the northeast section near Criss Creek and Bonaparte Lake.

UPDATE: 12:48 p.m.

An evacuation order has been issued for two properties near Bonaparte Lake due to the Sparks Lake wildfire.

The Thompson-Nicola Regional District said residents at 4010 and 4360 Jamieson-Spruce Grove Forest Service Rd. must leave the area immediately.

A map of the area affected by the evacuation order can be found on the TNRD website.

On Tuesday night, the TNRD issued an evacuation order for other 7 properties in the Bonaparte Lake area.

The massive Sparks Lake wildfire threatening hundreds homes northwest of Kamloops has seen very little growth over that last few days, according to BC Wildfire Service.

As of Wednesday morning, the wildfire is still being reported at 47,732 hectares in size and is still classified as out of control. The southeast perimeter of the blaze is about 24 kilometres northwest of Kamloops city limits at Tranquille.

BC Wildfire Service fire information officer Forrest Tower told Castanet Kamloops the blaze is most active in the northeastern section.

“There has been some growth around Criss Creek. That’s the area that is showing strengthened activity,” Tower said.

As of Wednesday morning, BCWS had 140 firefighters, 11 helicopters and 49 pieces of heavy equipment fighting the Sparks Lake wildfire.
