Directors at TNRD vote unanimously to ask Victoria to declare state of emergency

TNRD wants emergency call

The Thompson-Nicola Regional District’s board of directors voted unanimously on Thursday to ask the provincial government to declare a state of emergency over B.C.’s worsening wildfire situation.

Directors voted 26-0 at Thursday’s regular board meeting to ask Victoria to declare the situation an emergency.

More than 300 wildfires are burning in B.C., and 13 per cent of the TNRD’s vast area is under evacuation order or alert.

According to the TNRD, 876 properties in the regional district are under evacuation order, while a further 2,359 are on alert.

“The TNRD emergency operations centre has already declared six states of local emergency and has 15 active evacuation orders and 19 evacuation alerts in place,” the regional district said in a news release.

B.C. Premier John Horgan has previously said the province would declare a state of emergency when the BC Wildfire Service suggested it do so.
