A wildfire threatening hundreds of homes in the Sun Peaks area has grown in size.

The Embleton Mountain fire is now sitting just under 580 hectares, according to an updated perimeter Thursday from the BC Wildfire Service.

According to BC Wildfire data, the fire’s new perimeter is about 3.5 kilometres west of Sun Peaks municipal limits.

The BC Wildfire Service has said the blaze is expected to get bigger before it no longer poses a threat.

UPDATE: 5:29 p.m.

Municipal officials in Sun Peaks say chipper service will be available Friday for village residents, some of whom have piles of cut vegetation awaiting disposal with an aggressive wildfire burning nearby.

The Embleton Mountain fire is burning a few kilometres west of Sun Peaks, near Whitecroft. Sun Peaks and Heffley Lake are under evacuation alert, as are some other nearby properties, while Whitecroft is on evacuation order.

In recent days, Sun Peaks residents have been encouraged to clear their properties and businesses of excess vegetation to prevent the spread of fire.

In a post on social media on Thursday evening, the municipality of Sun Peaks said chipper service would be in the village on Friday to remove all tree limbs and brush sitting curbside.

“We appreciate your cooperation as crews work to remove this debris,” the post said.

No growth has been reported on the Embleton Mountain fire on Thursday.

This story will be updated if more information becomes known.

ORIGINAL STORY: 10:41 p.m.

While the Embleton wildfire west of Sun Peaks continues to burn out of control, fire crews saw minimal growth from the blaze over the past 24 hours.

In an update posted Thursday morning, the BC Wildfire Service says their operations on the fire went well Wednesday, with only light winds on the fire.

The fire is still estimated to be about 516 hectares in size.

Thursday, winds are expected to increase to 15-20 km/h, with gusts of about 25 km/h later in the day.

An evacuation order remains in place for 132 properties in the area, while another 170 properties, in addition to all of Sun Peaks Mountain Resort, are under an evacuation alert.

“Crews are working with the structure protection unit to protect properties and are working along the Lower Heffley-Louis Creek Road and the paved road into Whitecroft,” the BCWS said in an update.

“Heavy equipment is continuing to work with line locators to complete machine guard from Whitecroft moving southwest to the gravel pit on the paved road into Whitecroft. Heavy equipment is continuing to build guard in the northeast corner to keep the fire south of the switchbacks on the McClure forest service road and establish hose-lay. The McClure forest service road (northeast of the fire) and the Mount Embleton trail (southwest of the fire) are being assessed for control line feasibility.”

On Thursday, 25 BC Wildfire Service firefighters are working on the blaze, along with 21 municipal firefighters from the Barriere Volunteer Fire Department, the Sun Peaks Fire Rescue and the Armstrong Fire Department, working to protect structures. Ten pieces of heavy equipment and one helicopter are also providing support.

Some parts of the fire are burning in steep terrain.

“Unstable slopes and rockslides pose a risk to the safety of our crews. Inoperable areas are being monitored closely and helicopters are being utilized to bucket hot spots in problematic areas,” BC Wildfire says.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
