Pritchard firefighters had to get special permission from TNRD to fight fire Tuesday in Monte Creek

A home in the 1200-block of Hook Road east of Kamloops was reduced to rubble following a fatal fire on Tuesday.

The head of the Pritchard Volunteer Fire Department got special permission from the Thompson-Nicola Regional District on Tuesday to fight a fire burning out of control at a property in an unprotected rural area east of Kamloops.

One person is believed to have died in the fire, which is under investigation by the BC Coroners Service.

Police were called to a home in the 1200-block of Hook Road, near the junction of Highway 1 and Highway 97, at about 8:30 p.m. for a report of a fire. When Mounties arrived, the house was fully engulfed in flames.

The home was not within a fire protection zone, so no firefighters were dispatched to fight the blaze.

“I heard second-hand this place was on fire,” Pritchard Volunteer Fire Department Chief Marc Coray told Castanet Kamloops.

“It’s outside our boundaries. I got permission from the TNRD to go see what we can do.”

Coray said his crews arrived at the fire just after 9 p.m.

“It was fully involved,” he said. “It had been burning for quite some time.”

The house was destroyed by the flames, which burned for hours. The name of the deceased has not been made public.

The investigation into the blaze is ongoing.
