Valleyview secondary expansion set to be completed by spring of 2022, school district says

School expansion on track

The Valleyview secondary school expansion is on track to be completed by spring 2022, according to the Kamloops-Thompson school district.

Art McDonald, director of facilities and transportation for School District 73, provided a construction update for the joint city council, school district and board of education meeting Tuesday.

“We’re still on track to be open about this time next year, so hopefully we’ll be moving around spring break,” McDonald said.

“The structural steel is all in now, they’re working on the envelope, and once that’s completed the interior will start.”

He said roofing on the expansion would start over the next week or two.

According to McDonald, once school staff moves inside, there will still be about four months of work to renovate parking lots and retaining walls.

Mayor Ken Christian asked McDonald about plans for installing parking.

“The street that’s immediately north of the school field where students park was kind of a roughshod kind of parking situation. I’m wondering if that’s going to be upgraded as part of the site plan,” he said.

McDonald said that was a requirement from the city, and there will be a new sidewalk running down the area, including parallel parking spots.

Construction of the expansion project began in 2020. It is expected the expansion will eliminate the need for portables, and add an additional 525 seats to the school.
